Job Development & Employment Readiness Done Virtually

Looking for the right job is always an undertaking, but having to shift the way it’s done due to a pandemic is extra challenging. However, Compass job seeker, Andrew was up for the task! He completed a Discovery assessment with Compass which showed that he was suited for a career in retail, however, at the start of the pandemic, his job search was put on hold.

In September, Andrew and the team at Compass got to work on his resume. There were a lot of retail positions opening up for the holidays and he sharpened his skills by participating in Compass weekly online Job Skills classes to practice interviewing, customer service skills, resolving complaints, and other tasks. This was also an opportunity to connect with cohort peers who had similar employment goals.

Andrew applied for several different positions and got an interview at Marshalls. Even though he was nervous walking into his interview, especially since it was the first he’d ever done, he was “one hundred percent ready and prepared” because of all the practice he and his Job Developer had done beforehand.

His hard work paid off and the manager was so impressed that he offered him a position on the spot.

Andrew says that was the biggest thing that surprised him in his job search process. “I got hired

immediately, and that never happens!”

He was also excited to share his accomplishment with his online cohort peers. As he described his interview and hiring process, he gave them advice and encouragement for their own job interviews. His achievement has inspired them to continue to work toward their professional goals.
