My name is Volodymyr and my family moved here from Ukraine a few years ago. We did not speak English or know how to find work in America. My wife, Maria, and I were referred to the Workfirst program and Silvie, the Compass Program Director, helped us enroll in ESL classes and get placed at a host worksite to gain experience. We completed the first time just as COVID-19 hit and were unable to find employment. But we didn’t give up!

We were placed at another host site and were encouraged daily by Silvie, our worksite supervisor and other staff and volunteers who helped us learn English in the workplace. I was hired on as a warehouse staff team member and I am certified on the forklift and on how to use all the warehouse equipment. I am still learning more English every day. My family and I are excited to be here in America and able to work and have a better life for us and a bright future for our son!
